Sahara Douz Festival

For four days at the end of November in the ramshackle city of the south, Douz is a festival that is so magical in nature that to witness it is transfixing. The Sahara Douz Festival is also called the Saharan Festival.

Its prime aim is to celebrate the desert way of life that has thrived here for centuries. More recently as the culture in Tunisia is evolving, this great festival and spectacle is now a means of preserving this special way of life!

The festival in Douz is amazing! People come in droves from the cities to the north, but also from the vast expanse of the desert the oasis, Douz itself. On the outskirts of town is the spectacle’s arena where visitors are mesmerized for four fantastic days at the end of November.

There is traditional food, including yummy Berber pizzas baked over open fires in Berber camps sites. The music is ever-alluring and melodic coming from the surrounding Bedouin tents and the shows and performances are brilliant! Can you imagine seeing a gyrating belly dancer balancing seven clay pots whilst climbing a ladder? Maybe a camel fight or a rabbit race?

The men set out to impress the women by posing, prancing and posturing on show quality Arabian steeds. One of the best tricks is when a man in full desert robes billowing behind him rides a racing horse on his head! The daring riders certainly do impress!

The most anticipated event is always the marriage tableau, or Bedouin marriage, a very sacred and revered ancient tradition that is still observed in southern Tunisia. Leave the package holidays behind in the north and choose Tunisia vacation rentals in the south where the people of Douz will welcome you to their town and their way of life with open arms.
