Dragon Boat Festival from Cape Town villas

Over 50 million people in 40 countries participate in a dragon boat festival or race each year. In 1992 dragon boats were presented to Cape Town as a gift from Taiwan. In the years that followed the Dragon Boat Festival turned into a fully fledged event on the famed V&A Waterfront which is a short step from a variety of Cape Town villas.

Plan a Cape Town villas holiday to not only to explore the city, but plan your holiday during the Dragon Boat Race and get a feel for Cape Town's integrated culture. If the excitement of the Dragon Boat races is too much for you, then escape to the top of Table Mountain and enjoy the spectacular views of Cape Town and Table Bay.

As you may have guessed dragon boats originated in China over 2000 years ago. Qu Yuan was a well loved and respected Chinese poet. He became deeply saddened when the king would not heed his advice. In his great despair he threw himself into the Mi Lo River.

Word of his actions rapidly spread through town and his friends rushed to his aid. Unfortunately Qu Yuan was already dead. To distract the fish from devouring his body and as a sacrifice to his spirit, the people threw rice balls wrapped in reed leaves into the water. This sad legend is commemorated today with the Dragon Boat Festival.

Held in mid-November the Dragon Boat Festival races in Cape Town are as much a competition as a weekend party event. Book Cape Town villas to get in the heart of the racing action. The dragon boats are long and narrow featuring a colourful dragon head on the front and a tail on the back.

The crew paddle through the water in a sprint to beat their competition. Drums are onboard for the Dragon Boat Festival and their sounds reverberate against Table Mountain. The V&A Waterfront is the venue for the races. This ideal location is perfect when you stay in Cape Town villas as it is home not only to the festival, but also to excellent bars and restaurants as Cape Town’s social hotspot.
