One of the oldest golfing competitions in the world is held each year at Oporto Golf Course, the Skeffington Cup. This course has narrow fairways and undulating greens. It also has a great restaurant and bar featuring the region’s top Port wines.
Algarve golf - San Lorenzo, Quinta do Lago
With so many amazing courses to choose from, Algarve golf is truly ideal. GolfWorld magazine has voted San Lorenzo Golf Course Europe’s third best golf course. It is located near one of Europe’s most exclusive resort areas, Quinta do Lago,where there are some fantastic Algarve villas. Quinta do Lago offers brilliant fairways and fast greens at one of Portugal’s best courses, and is home many times over to the Portuguese Open.
Sir Henry Cotton is the most famous course designer in Algarve. It is no wonder that the Penina Golf Course near Portimao attests to his legendary status. This championship course has you strategising from the first tee. After that it is a pleasurable, though sometimes painful golfing experience.

Lisbon golf courses
There are 12 great golf courses in and around Lisbon that are easily accessible from Lisbon villas. The highest concentration is around Estoril where the International Golf Week is held each year. Estoril Golf Club has the Portuguese Open among other international competitions on its list of accolades. Robert Trent Jones out did himself in designing Penha Longa Golf Club. Built around a monastery, this course is beautiful.
Long sloping fairways and pristine greens make golfing here a pleasure. Also by Jones is the Quinta de Marinha near Cascais. There is a great driving range and practice area incorporated. Other noteworthy Lisbon golf courses include Belavista Golf Club, Quinta da Beloura Golf Course and Troia Golf Course.
Algarve golf courses continue to reign supreme in Portugal and with plenty of options of Algarve villas for a comfortable holiday stay, it is no wonder so many people flock to southern Portugal. However, keep in mind that Lisbon and Porto golf courses are nothing to turn your nose up at either.
