Events in Algarve – Moorish Nights & Sudoeste

When touring Algarve and renting villas in Portugal, what better way to enjoy the locals and the customs than to partake in the festive events in Algarve? The fishing village of Olhau hosts a massive seafood event that is all about eating the fruits of the sea. Festival do Marisco in August will have you munching on fried salt cod and sampling yummy fish stew.

The Algarve International Film Festival is making its mark on the indie circuit in Portimao during the month of May. Moorish Nights in Cacela Vehla in July is a festival dedicated to the Arab influence on the town. Zambujeira do Mar is on the southwest corner of Portugal in Algarve. In August the dramatic coastal town host the Sudoeste Festival, one the foremost music festivals in Europe.

Algarve beaches

The entire coastline of Algarve is a sight to behold from the comfort of Algarve villas. From striking cliffs to the gentle Algarve beaches the coastline is amongst the world’s most spectacular. One of the prettiest Algarve beaches is Praia Ilha de Tavira to the east. It is actually a sand bar also known as Praia das Cascas. Also near Tavira is Praia Verde in a divine setting great for all ages. The most well known beach is Praia da Rocha near Portimao.

Praia de Alvor is a sand bar that creates a calm lagoon ideal for relaxing swims. Meia Praia is another well known Algarve beach that is good for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. If it is an escape you seek, take a ferryboat out to the group of three islands, Armona, Culatra and Farol, from Olhao to find peace and quiet on fine grain sand and warm Atlantic waters.

Places of interest in Algarve

Olhao is a remarkable fishing village, home to one of the best markets in Algarve. Come early to get the best produce, meat, herbs and seafood. The capital of Algarve is Faro with ancient fortifications still protecting the city. The Faro Archaeological Museum and the Carmo Church in Faro are significant places of interest in Algarve. The Faro Chapel of Bones may be macabre, but is worth a visit. Ria Formosa Nature Reserve is a fantastic park with many and varied wildlife species to keep you entertained all day.

Albufeira is a charming fishing village in the central coast with classic white washed homes and an impressive Moorish castle. For Algarve wine, tour the town of Lagoa and sample delicious reds. Lagos is one of the greatest cities and places of interest in Algarve that you can reach easily from Algarve villas. Lagos is an old walled city that used to trade in slaves and now specialises in gorgeous beaches and beautiful yachts.
