Festival of Sacred Music in Fez

Fez or Fes is one of the largest cities in Morocco, located 200km east of Rabat. Fez was the capital of Morocco until 1912 and has been an important cultural and spiritual centre for centuries. The internationally known Festival of Sacred Music in Fez takes place at the end of May or beginning of June every year and lasts 9 days approximately.

Thousands of people from all over the world come to Fez to soak up the extraordinary atmosphere of peace and goodwill which prevails during the concerts. The concerts normally take place early in the evening in lovely places such as the magnificent Arch of Bab al Makina, or the gardens of the Batha Museum, among others.

The First Festival of Sacred Music in Fez

The first Festival of Sacred Music took place in1994. It was a scholar called Faouzi Skali who came up with the idea of bringing together artists to perform sacred music from various religions and countries, so that “people discover the beauty of each religion and culture”.

Although Morocco’s main religion is Islam, people are free to practise any other religion. Originally only sacred music from monotheist religions was performed at the Festival, however, these days artists also perform sacred music from Hinduism, Buddhism and other religions. The 2010 Festival has been programmed from 4th to 10th June.

Performers at the Festival of Sacred Music in Fez

Every year, there are some excellent performers at the Festival of Sacred Music in Fez who play, sing or dance religious tunes from their countries of origin. In the 2009 Sacred Music Festival, artists from Morocco, Lebanon, France, USA, UK, Arabia, India, Turkey, Iran and others, performed spiritual music.

One of the most fascinating acts is that of the Sufi Brotherhoods, with their hypnotic chanting or their Islamic trance music played with a variety of instruments, which could be drums, or violins, or trumpets. A spectacle that should not be missed!
