Lourdes Grotto
Lourdes Grotto

The story of Lourdes began in 1858 with a fourteen year old girl called Bernadette, to whom the Virgin Mary revealed herself in a number of divine apparitions. Today Lourdes is one of the most visited places in France, not only for pilgrimages, but also for historical sightseeing. Renting Midi-Pyrenees villas in Lourdes opens the door to the miraculous wonder of Lourdes, Christianity and the stunning Pyrenees Mountains.

The Story of Lourdes

On 11 February 1858, three girls ventured to the bank of the River Gave near Lourdes to collect dead wood. The young Bernadette heard a sound described as a gust of wind and in the direction of the Grotto saw what she said was a woman dressed in white, wearing a veil, a blue belt and a yellow rose upon her feet. Bernadette is said to have prayed the Rosary with the woman, and at the end of the prayer the woman disappeared. A series of miraculous and recognised apparitions followed over the next few weeks at the Lourdes Grotto.

Word of Bernadette’s visions quickly spread across the land and within two short weeks over three thousand people from different districts and countries had gathered to witness the apparitions at the Lourdes Grotto. The divine apparition did indeed reveal herself, “I am the Immaculate Conception.” With these miraculous words, The Virgin Mary asked that a church be built in the location of her apparitions. And so begins one of the greatest stories in all of Christendom, the story of Lourdes.

Exploring Lourdes

Since 1858, the Roman Catholic Church has recognised Lourdes as a holy place and has taken the apparitions to Bernadette as truth. With this recognition, the fame of Lourdes has reached followers worldwide and inspired pilgrimages numbering in the millions. So popular is Lourdes that it receives over 5 million visitors each year and Lourdes has the second highest concentration of hotels in France, second only to Paris.

Located in the majestic Pyrenees, Lourdes is a divine place of spirituality, sanctuary, healing and promise. Stay at French villas and Midi-Pyrenees villas, and explore the Sanctuaries of Lourdes, the Basilica and the Grotto of Massabielle. They are the main points of interest in Lourdes with the Pyrenees Mountains providing even further excursions in the southwest of France.
