The town of Pernik just southwest of Sofia is home of a truly astonishing spectacle. The Masquerade Games is one of the country’s most honoured and amusing cultural events. The God Dionysus is much revered throughout this part of the world and this is another fabulous festival held in his honour. Come and celebrate Dionysus and drink wine from fantastic nearby Bulgaria villas.
Dionysus Festival Kukeri rituals
This Dionysus Festival is a mix of ancient rituals dating back to Pagan times with a costume competition that will leave you in awe. The ritual is a performance spectacle put on for the people as it has been for centuries. The men in masks are called kukeri and sometimes this event is called the Kukeri Ritual Games.
The men pay homage to Dionysus by wearing fur and rural dress and putting on magnificent masks. They dance through the streets to the clanging of bells and loud rattles to scare away evil spirits and welcome the spring and future harvest. Their songs speak of old folklore and prayers for a prosperous year. Nearby are several Bulgaria villas that will make your stay even more comfortable.
